Name: Laura Binks

From: Mayor of the Strathbogie Shire Council

Volunteer Position: On the gate

Why did you volunteer at #ARC22? Laura is a regular volunteer in the local community and has found #ARC22 to be “really incredible” and a “great opportunity to show support to the rowing events” held in the region. With the last minute venue change, she recognised the need for “some extra muscle” and was “more than happy to put [her] hand up”.

About Laura

Laura has found working on the gate to be very enjoyable as she has been able to “meet lots of people and have lots of chats” with people from all over Australia. Earlier in the week, she had a go at boat holding, and stated she would be “excited to get back out there” to witness some of the high-performance crews.

Acknowledging that some bias may be present, she praised the Nagambie Lakes Regatta Centre, and the ability of Rowing Australia, Rowing Victoria, and all involved in transforming the venue to host “an event of this scale and national importance”.

With no rowing background whatsoever, it is certainly a new environment for Laura, however she “loves the water” and has tried several different water sports. Her #ARC22 volunteer partner, Jemima, has been “encouraging [her] to give it a go”, so hopefully we might see Laura on the water sometime soon!

We thank Laura, and Jemima, for volunteering their time to help at this year’s Australian Rowing Championships!
