Rowing Australia (RA) is disappointed to announce the departure of Bernard Savage from his role as Performance Director, following acceptance of a role at Hockey Australia, based in Perth.

Since taking up the role in October 2016, Savage has successfully led the Men’s, Women’s and Para rowing programs which culminated in securing a joint best performance from any Australian Rowing Team at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, with two Gold and two Bronze medals as well as achieving strong performances at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, including a Silver medal.

Rowing Australia CEO, Ian Robson, acknowledged the contribution that Bernard has made to the organisation:

“Bernard has made a profound contribution across the five years of his tenure at Rowing Australia for which we will be forever grateful. The icing on the cake of our five medals at the Olympics/Paralympics will never tell in full the story of the unprecedented cycle from Rio to Tokyo.”

“We wish Bernard the best of luck in his new role and would like to thank him for his tireless efforts to provide the best possible support environment for our athletes, coaches and support staff.”

Savage spoke of his departure from RA:

“It has been a thoroughly enjoyable and rewarding five years, but for personal reasons I am moving on from the role.

I am really proud of the athletes, the coaches, as well as the broader staff with what we have achieved together, under particularly challenging circumstances. I am confident that the program is in a strong position to build on the successes from the Tokyo 2020 campaign. I will be watching on with interest and wish the team all the best for Paris 2024 and beyond.”

An update will be provided in due course on the process to appoint a new Performance Director.
