Rowing Australia (RA) today wishes to advise that following the return from the Tokyo Olympics that Ian Wright has decided to depart from his role as Head Coach of the Reinhold Batschi Men’s National Training Centre, to return to New Zealand and reunite with his family.
Ian Wright coached the Gold Medal winning Men’s Four at Tokyo and RA Chief Executive Ian Robson acknowledged this great success and more broadly the contribution that Ian had made across the entire Rio to Tokyo cycle.
“After the Rio Olympics, Rowing Australia completely restructured its approach to its High-Performance Program with the establishment of two National Training Centres. Ian Wright was appointed as the inaugural Reinhold Batschi Men’s National Training Centre Head Coach in 2016. Ian has led the program, based in Canberra, for the entirety of the unprecedented five-year cycle to Tokyo.
In that time the Australian Rowing Team (ART) has delivered significant World Cup and World Championship success. This culminated in the ART securing World Rowing’s World Cup trophy for the first time in 2019. This was the last full international racing season before Covid forced a domestic based preparation in 2020 and 2021 in the run up to the rescheduled Tokyo Games.”
Ian Wright spoke of his departure from Rowing Australia stating that “I am proud of the achievements from the past five years with the Men’s program at Rowing Australia. An obvious highlight being the Gold medal in Tokyo. It has been a tough second half of this Olympiad, which has seen me have extended periods away from my family, longer than usual due to Covid. I am looking forward to now having the opportunity to spend time with my family back in New Zealand.”
Ian Robson added: “On behalf of everyone at RA, I wish Ian and his family every success in their next chapter. We will be forever grateful for Ian’s hard work, drive and vision for our program and the success it has delivered, culminating in the Gold Medal for the Men’s Four and the Bronze Medal for the Men’s Quad in Tokyo.”
RA will shortly issue a Statement setting out the process by which it will appoint a new Men’s NTC Head Coach to lead the program to Paris 2024.
