David Bartholot and Marcus Della Marta know that every expectation will be on them to win the Australian Rowing Championship final for the Open Men’s Double Scull on Friday.

As the recently selected Australian Men’s Double Scull crew for the 2024 international season that is soon to start, it is understandable that they are the standout favourites.

It is a similar scenario for the Australian Women’s Double Scull crew of Harriet Hudson (SRC) and Amanda Bateman (Mercantile), who are also highly fancied to win their final on Friday.

Day five of the Australian Rowing Championships at the Sydney International Regatta Centre will see a medal race bonanza. The Double Scull finals should be two of the many highlights.

Bartholot said that he and Della Marta are not taking the occasion lightly, especially off the back of a brutally tough period of training and racing, from the NSW Championships to the national selection trials and now at the Australian Rowing Championships – all at Penrith.

With every race, the build-up of physical and mental fatigue heightens the importance of recovery, as Bartholot remarked after he won the Open Men’s Single Scull final on Thursday.

“It’s hard to back up day after day and give your all in every race. It’s just about getting the body ready, the mind ready and trying to do it again tomorrow,” Bartholot said.

A win on Friday will still provide a much-deserved boost to Bartholot and Della Marta, who placed second in Thursday’s Single Scull final, for their Double Scull ambitions.

That ambition is to race the boat at the Paris Olympics in Paris, but first they must qualify the boat for Australia at the Final Qualifying Regatta at Lucerne, Switzerland in May.
