About John Meet John, one of our amazing volunteers at #ARC23. Unlike most of the volunteers here, John is not affiliated with any club. John is here to lend a hand and obtain his Level 3 Umpiring License as a part of the Queensland Boat Race Official team. A former rower and coach of Hawthorn Rowing Club in Victoria, John is no stranger to the sport. He loves the “teamwork aspect” of rowing and believes it’s “the best team sport out there”.

At #ARC23, John wears many hats including Patrol In and Starting Marshall. When asked about his experience so far, John couldn’t help but share his excitement about the “view from the Umpires boat when the Eights start off the blocks.” It’s volunteers like John who make events like these possible, and we can’t thank him enough for his hard work and dedication.

Why did you want to become a Coles Supermarkets Volunteer at #ARC23?

John is no stranger to the rowing world, hence his unwavering devotion to the sport and its community. Despite his love for rowing, John admits that “volunteering is a great way to get out of work.” Don’t let his humour fool you, he takes his role seriously. As a Patrol In volunteer, John expertly guides boats to safely park on the pontoon, and if you mess up your park, be prepared for playful banter from John.
